Set on the north shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto was created on March 6, 1834, when the settlement of York was renamed Toronto with a population of 2.4 million, 5.5 million in the Greater Toronto Area.
Fortune Magazine has ranked Toronto first overall in its international survey of the best cities in which to live and work, calling it, among other things, the safest city in North America.
