Set on the north shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto was created on March 6, 1834, when the settlement of York was renamed Toronto with a population of 2.4 million, 5.5 million in the Greater Toronto Area.
Fortune Magazine has ranked Toronto first overall in its international survey of the best cities in which to live and work, calling it, among other things, the safest city in North America. The New York Times had the following to say about Toronto: "This is a city of immigrants without slums, without graffiti, and without gridlock, dynamic but seldom frenetic, a metropolis with clean air and healthy downtown neighbourhoods.
According to the United Nations, Toronto is the most ethnically diverse city in the world. A remarkable 41 percent of its population was born outside of Canada. The city is home to more than 80 ethnic groups and more than 100 languages, and is marked by an incredible diversity of distinct neighbourhoods, cultures and communities. A small sample includes Little Italy, Queen Street West (a trendy soho-style downtown area), the Entertainment District, the Fashion District, Greektown, Little India, three Chinatowns, and so much more! Immediately surrounding the University of Toronto is the Annex, Chinatown, Kensington, and Yorkville.
